Exercise: Alteration

This is the original photo.

I wanted a more balanced image so I moved the gannet in flight over to the right, and cropped the image to a square format.

This is problematic in that the contents of the photo are present as they were at the time but not quite in same position. This wouldn’t be accepted into a wildlife competition but perhaps it would be OK as a documentary image? No, probably not.

I combined two images for the next photo and it’s obviously dishonest, not least because starlings have gone from the Surrey winter, but I had this printed at A3 for a camera club competition and although a few people thought it might have been manipulated they couldn’t indicate any areas on the print that proved their theory.

Avalanche bird?

Avalanche bird?

Unfortunately their reaction affected me quite badly because the implication was that I wasn’t capable of taking a photo like this so it must be fake even though they couldn’t say why. I gave up on camera clubs and competition soon after that event.

About watlvry

Flaneur for my own ailments; government and corporate hypocrisy; guitar stuff; the music business; home made videos featuring home made tunes played at home; a bit of golf; and of course photography. Specifically "art" photography (doesn't exist) and contemporary photography ( sadly does exist in all its grotesque reality).
